This August the Schooner Zodiac will embark on a 3-day 2-night exploration of the San Juan Islands with a special focus on the first European explorers who encountered the islands. The cruise will focus on the George Vancouver expedition’s first survey of the archipelago aboard HMS Chatham in 1792, but will also include information on the Spanish explorers that preceded Vancouver and the American Wilkes expedition half a century later.
This year we will be joined by renowned local maritime artist Steve Mayo. Steve has spent decades painting and studying the maritime history of the San Juan Islands. By combining his skills as a mariner, artist and historian, Steve’s watercolors give us a glimpse into key moments in history. You can find more information on his work at www.stevemayoart.com.
During the cruise, passengers will be able to visit areas of historical interest in the San Juan Islands both aboard the ship and also trips ashore to explore the islands. Evenings will feature seminars to discuss the events and landmarks of the day. Undoubtedly one topic of conversation will be the mystery of HMS Chatham’s lost anchor in the San Juan Islands and the search to recover it. The Zodiac will be Chatham’s stand in for this spectacular reliving of history while our passengers enjoy the perks of modern living as we cruise to and from secluded anchorages. As always the cruise includes optional sailing and navigation instruction.

“What an adventure! This is a hands-on experience! Duty rotations include chart room, helm, bow watch and messenger. And everyone helps to raise the sails. The captain and all-volunteer crew are fun and ever-watchful over their charges. No surprise here…good food and plenty of it for very hungry people….”
