For the first time, Zodiac is offering an open-enrollment voyage just for high school students. Make new friends while learning to sail a 160-foot sailing vessel and exploring the San Juan Islands.
Guided by our experienced crew, students will learn how to navigate, steer, and sail the Zodiac, getting to truly experience life on board a tall ship. Students will be divided into “sailing stations” or small groups led by an experienced crew member, whose job it is to work on one particular line or pair of lines. Working together, students will learn how to raise, lower, and furl the sails (including the largest working mainsail on the West Coast!), as well as how to tack, jibe, and reef the sails. Once we’ve raised sails and tacked a few times, we’ll have a sail theory lesson to explain the general physics of sailing, and how all the different sailing stations on Zodiac work together to propel her through the water using nothing but the wind. Even long-time sailors will learn something new; sailing a 220 ton tall ship requires a level of teamwork, timing, and coordination that is very different than any other sailing experience. Students will learn how to navigate using a combination of modern and ancient technologies, from paper charts, chip logs, and lead lines to GPS chart plotters, depth sounders, and radar. Every student will get an opportunity to take the helm and steer the ship under the watchful eye of our captain and crew. Each afternoon we’ll drop the anchor in a secluded bay or harbor. Afternoon activities may include hiking ashore, kayaking, rowing/sailing our dinghy, an optional swim call, and games. After dinner, explore the sea floor using our ROV (remotely operated submersible), test your knowledge of stability and sail theory by building and racing tiny wooden boats, and play a couple games of cards before bedtime. This voyage includes all meals, snacks, and beverages (pop/fizzy water, tea/hot cocoa, etc). Our phenomenal chef turns out three hearty, nutritious, and utterly delicious meals a day and can accommodate almost any dietary need. This trip is ONLY open to high school students aged 13-18 years. “Our 3-day trip through the San Juan islands was absolutely fantastic! Considering the very brisk winds on day 1, and also how important passenger involvement is for hoisting and dousing the enormous sails, I was extremely impressed with how much we actually sailed (rather than motoring). This is no boring leisure cruise — it is an adventure!’
