Join us for our second Schooner Zodiac Book Club sailing!
Come aboard our second “Books A’Sail” trip! We’re honored to have Fairhaven’s own Village Books as our official sponsor, with Owners Paul Hanson and Kelly Evert guiding our literary journey this time out. Their first pick: local author Jim Lynch’s brand new novel “Before The Wind”, the story of a multi-generation boat building family set on the waters of Puget Sound.
Growing up, my family seemed to spend as much time on sailboats as we did in our house. By my late teens, I started secretly thinking of myself as a novelist-in-waiting and daydreamed of writing a book that captured what life felt like in this water wonderland loosely called Puget Sound. I wanted to split it all wide open — the natural beauty, the sailing obsession, the push and pull of family, my clumsy quests for meaning and romance.
Jim and his wife Denise will be joining us on our sail through the San Juan Islands, where passengers will have an opportunity to explore the connections between Jim’s Northwest sailing and writing life alongside the Schooner Zodiac’s multi-generation tall ship restoring family and crew.
Kelly and Paul are busy picking the perfect companion books to read alongside “Before The Wind”, and we’ll update this page when they’re ready to announce.
We’ll take advantage of the late-summer days to get in three full days of sailing and book discussion amid the gorgeous San Juan Islands, accompanied by a variety of marine life from bald eagles to porpoises maybe even whales! In between we’ll dip into all that the Schooner Zodiac has on offer, from kayaking to hiking to cocktails on deck in the sunset.

Bearing this in mind, the captain and crew will always endeavor to give passengers the most incredible experience possible. Already booked and wondering what to pack? See our handy packing list.
“What an adventure! This is a hands-on experience! Duty rotations include chart room, helm, bow watch and messenger. And everyone helps to raise the sails. The captain and all-volunteer crew are fun and ever-watchful over their charges. No surprise here…good food and plenty of it for very hungry people….”
